A Festival of Fairytales for Grown-ups 11th – 15th December 2013

A Festival of Fairytales for Grown-ups

ART, FILM & MORE

Before the shows and in the hour-long gap between performances each night there are all sorts of things for you to see and do. We’re adding to this list all the time as our plans get bigger and better…

Art Macabre Drawing Salons

The fabulous and quirky Art Macabre Drawing Salons will take up residence throughout the festival – running 8pm – 9pm every evening…bringing a lethal injection of theatricality to the art of mark making. Forget boring life drawing, try some death drawing.

Dare to enter the depths of Baba Yaga’s house of human bones to discover and draw the distinctively dark traditional fairy tales and folklore of Russia. Delight in a wintry feast of words and tableaux scenes, as costumed and semi-nude (temperature depending!) characters depict tales from a beautiful dead princess, the immortal Koshchei and terrifying Baba Yaga herself. Prepare to be chilled to the bone! Drawing materials provided, with the support of Cass Art.

Film

We’ll be showing short films (puppetry, animation, paper cuts, bits of fairytale and more) from the likes of Mucky Puppets, Megan Kearny, Boris & Sergey (FlabberGast Theatre), Ben Mars, Dina Noto and others.

Stories from The Brigade

The Barge House is being staffed with the most over qualified usher’s you’re likely to encounter – including our wonderful friends from Tailspin, Scandalmongers and Infectious Theatre – so don’t be at all surprised if they break out into stories, offer to tell you your fortune, offer up dodgy jokes and so on….at appropriate and inappropriate moments.

Art & Exhibitions

The Bargehouse will be filled with art by Sooz Belnavis, by Joshua Wiskey, by Mark Maxwell and others. And you’ll have the chance to explore a whispering Norwegian Fairytale Forest created by sound artist Filipe Gomes, with design from Anne Pawlak, and trolls from Emily Parrish – and made possible by generous support from Norwegian Embassy.

 Music

Music in the bar will be provided by Columbus GiantJulie Mckee, Filipe Gomes, with some teasers from the Glow Globes. There may be some other random musical moments as friends and strangers (in equal measure probably) pop in to say hello and offer up some entertainment.

The Bar

Yes, there will be a bar in the building…a star-lit, home-made affair, serving wine, beer and Clipper Hot Chocolate to keep you warm, as well as something stronger. And to add a touch of Narnia, we’ll be serving up tit-bits of Sultan’s Turkish Delight. The bar will take payemnts as cash or cheque only I’m sorry to say.
