FOUNDATION WEEK 1 – INTRODUCTORY STORYTELLING COURSE

Ben Haggarty
SUN 23 JUNE, 7.30PM - FRI 28 JUNE, 5PM

This fun and intensive week-long, residential, introductory course sets out the paradigm of contemporary performance storytelling. It is equally suited to those specifically interested in the public performance of stories and those wishing to use spoken word storytelling within their wider professional career.

Working with folktales and fairytales, it provides a framework for understanding the different genres of international traditional narrative; demonstrates how imagination and experience combine in storytelling; differentiates the nature of orality from the nature of literacy; shows how language works, and introduces Rasa theory – an ancient and highly effective compositional tool.

Participants will explore the relationship between words and visualisation, narrative patterns and structure; how improvised language operates within a narrative, and how composition can bring out the emotional life of a story.

Expect a week packed with exercises, discussion, feasts, and telling stories. You’ll discover your innate inner storyteller and begin to appreciate its skills…
